John “Jay” McDonald joined Clawson and Staubes in 1988, immediately after receiving his juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina. Jay tries numerous cases each year throughout the State of South Carolina, often achieving favorable verdicts for his clients. Despite being a formidable opponent, attorneys on the opposite side express their enjoyment in working with Jay because of his easygoing nature and sense of fair play.
In 2006, Jay’s exceptional litigation skills were demonstrated by his work on a case involving an All-Terrain Vehicle accident with over $1,000,000.00 in medical bills. Jay defended this case vigorously and, after a two week trial, he received an impressive defense verdict.
Jay became a Certified Mediator in 2007 and is a longstanding member of the Charleston County Bar and South Carolina Bar Associations. He has also been a member of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association since 2000. Jay provides instruction and lectures on litigation topics that include: the use of biomechanical experts in wreck cases; State v. Council/Daubert issues; summary jury trials as an option to alternative dispute resolution; and evidentiary issues.
Jay resides in Mount Pleasant with his wife Kristen, daughter Susanne, and their dogs Lassie & Buddy, and cat Bandit. He enjoys running, golf, and Clemson football.
