Trevor Cangelosi to Teach “Philosophy of Law” Class at Charleston School of Law

Clawson & Staubes attorney Trevor Cangelosi will serve as an Adjunct Professor at the Charleston School of Law. Trevor will utilize his B.A. in Philosophy from U.N.C. – Chapel Hill to teach “Philosophy of Law” at CSOL. The class will cover a number of central topics in the philosophy of law, including identifying the sovereign, law vs. morality, the nature of fundamental rights, and contemporary issues in liberty and punishment.

Trevor practices with the firm’s civil litigation group, with focuses on insurance defense and personal injury. He represents insurance companies, individuals, and businesses in all South Carolina state and federal courts regarding these matters.

Chris Nickels Featured in Daniel Island News

How did the business get started?

A dynamic and growing law firm, we trace our roots to 1975 starting as a general civil practice. In 1980, Clawson and Staubes expanded into new practice areas resulting from social and economic changes in Charleston and the Lowcountry. To exceed client demands, we developed expertise in probate, estate planning, corporation, premises liability, workers’ compensation, products liability, admiralty, commercial and construction law. Although the firm continues to grow and now includes more than 30 attorneys and 65 support staff, everyone at Clawson & Staubes remains grounded by the philosophy of our two founding partners, Robert G. Clawson, Jr. and Chris B. Staubes, Jr. Their belief was to provide quality legal services with a positive attitude and to find the best solution for each client by carefully analyzing all options and working together with the client towards positive outcomes.

Over the past 36 years, we have evolved into a full service law firm with offices in two states. We practice in a wide variety of areas including civil litigation, commercial law, bankruptcy, corporate law, tax, estate planning, real estate, workers’ compensation, and alternative dispute resolution. In 1997, we became a multi-state law firm, establishing a Charlotte, North Carolina office. We now serve clients throughout North and South Carolina to meet even greater client needs including bankruptcy and business problems.

What do you enjoy most about running your business?

At Clawson and Staubes we are successful because we deliver what our clients demand and deserve – the best legal services at the lowest cost. Our approach is reflected in our attitude towards our clients. Our clients are like us: dynamic, creative and committed to excellence. In terms of your business, what are some of your major challenges?

Clawson and Staubes is the largest law firm on DI and the largest firm in Berkeley County. Challenges include staying ahead of the technology curve, balancing our work and civic responsibilities and navigating the Don Holt Bridge on a regular basis!  

If a friend of yours was planning to start their own business, what advice would you give them?

If considering opening a law firm, do not view oneself as simply another attorney. Instead think collaboratively with your client as problem-solvers, and remain committed to processes and services to meet the legal demands of the communities and folks you serve.

How did 2010 go for you?

Clawson and Staubes was prepared for challenges presented in 2010.

How did 2010 compare with 2009?

2009 & 2010 were roughly the same insofar as business. The economy presented challenges, but we were fortunate and actually brought on several staff members and lawyers.

How is 2011 going so far?

Business is on an uptick; a slow steady recovery is in the works.

How do you think 2011 will do, overall?

Cautiously optimistic.

Any big surprises of late?

In 2011, the Chicago Cubs will win a pennant for the first time since 1945.

What should customers know about you?

My wife Kimarie and I have three children, a rescue dog (Ripley) and a rescue cat (Pancake). All, including the pets, enjoy “long walks on the beach,” working out, and Chicago style deep-dish pizza.

In terms of your business, any recent memorable moments?

Recently, U.S. News & World Report ranked Clawson & Staubes, LLC as a Tier 1 law firm in South Carolina in the areas of insurance law, bankruptcy, creditor-debtor rights, and insolvency and reorganization law. In June 2011, Clawson & Staubes Member Ron Jones will become Chair of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. My Associate, Clawson and Staubes attorney Ravi Sanyal, has been elected as Chairman of the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission.
